I have over 20 years experience in trauma and orthopaedic surgery. I was appointed as a consultant surgeon at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust in 2005 and joined Sport & Orthopaedic Clinic Bristol based at Spire Hospital in 2007. My major interest and expertise is all aspects of shoulder surgery including rotator cuff tears and am recognised by all the major healthcare insurers.
I was an undergraduate for medical training at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, Imperial College in London 1988-1993. After junior posts in London and Bath I spent six months as a World Orthopaedic Concern volunteer surgeon in rural South Africa during 1997-8 before higher surgical training as a registrar on the South West rotation based in Bristol 1999-2005. My advanced surgical fellowship training for 1 year in 2004 was with Mr Simon Bell at the Melbourne Shoulder and Elbow Clinic in Australia and Dr Joe de Beer at the Cape Shoulder Institute in Cape Town, South Africa. Here I learnt the management of the rotator cuff tears and arthritis.

In 2006 I was awarded the Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education from the University of Bristol and in 2008 became the postgraduate tutor for orthopaedic registrar teaching. For over 5 years from 2012, I was the Training Programme Director for the 60 strong registrar training rotation for the Severn Deanery of Health Education England South West. I maintain a strong teaching portfolio. Between 2015 and 2022 I was a member of and chaired the national selection design group for recruitment of orthopaedic registrar surgeons. In 2017 I was appointed to the Specialty Advisory Committee for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and was the liaison member for the Republic of Ireland until 2022. I teach on many courses for surgery to the shoulder including rotator cuff tear and replacement operations. Since autumn 2023 I have been the lead consultant for elective orthopaedics at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust.
I am married with 3 teenage children and when not at work I enjoy cycling, swimming, skiing, playing cricket, tennis and golf as well as tinkering in the garden.
